Celebrating #WorldKindnessDay with Random Acts of Kindness
Recapping our week of kind acts in celebration of November 13’s #WorldKindnessDay…
This month, the Office of Student Life has partnered with friends from around The Ohio State University, our Columbus community and Buckeyes around Ohio to celebrate kindness leading up to World Kindness Day on November 13, 2018.
We kicked off our kindness initiative with a Pack Shack Feed the Funnel Party in partnership with the Ohio State Alumni Association, Ohio State Athletics Department and our friends at The Columbus Foundation’s Kind Columbus initiative. Then, we added Ohio University’s Division of Student Affairs to the team to help deliver over 200,000 meals to food pantries in Athens County. Read all about it here:
That was just the beginning — with the support of the Columbus Foundation and Kind Columbus, we dedicated the week of October 29 to delivering as many random acts of kindness to Buckeyes at Ohio State at beyond. Keep scrolling to get a glimpse at how creative our partners got in their #KindColumbus activities!
The Mr. Rogers Way
Mr. Rogers considered 143 his lucky number — to him, it represented the words I (one letter) LOVE (four letters) YOU (three letters). Mrs. Rogers appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show after her husband passed, and together they shared the meaning of the number 243 (WE love you).
We wanted to share our Buckeye love in honor Mr. Rogers, a true champion of kindness, so we surprised the residents of rooms 143 and 243 across Student Life’s residence halls with two gift cards each — one to keep and one to pass on to someone they love.
Surprises at the Ohio Union
Throughout the week, Student Life and our departments participated in lots of fun surprise acts of kindness around the Ohio Union.
From delivering freshly popped popcorn to our fellow Buckeyes…
…to surprising student leaders with gifts of kindness, we had a blast putting smiles on the faces of Ohio State students.
Sharing Kindness around Columbus
We didn’t confine our kindness to the Ohio State campus. Instead, we took it on the road, sharing #KindColumbus with a visit to Children’s Hospital with our friend Brutus and a trip to the Gladden Community House with the Ohio State Dance Team.
Meanwhile, the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Ohio State took time out of their days to bring lunch to a fire station that helped them earlier this year!
#KindColumbus with Residence Life
This year, two lucky floors in residence halls at Ohio State were surprised with something deliciously kind. At Drackett Tower, students were treated to Donatos Pizza, while over in Mendoza House snacks from Panera were delivered to an unsuspecting group of Buckeyes.
#KindColumbus doesn’t stop when the sun sets, and students at Bradley-Paterson proved it by spending an evening creating activity bags, blankets and kind letters for the patients and families at Children’s Hospital and the James Cancer Center.
Housekeeping staff joined the fun by recognizing Buckeyes in their halls who have always demonstrated exceptional kindness.
Keep Up the Kindness!
Have you experienced kindness lately? Have you demonstrated it yourself? We want to recognize you and your fellow kind Buckeyes throughout the rest of November!
When you share one way a Buckeye has demonstrated kindness recently, you’ll be entered to win a gift from Student Life. Just post about your experiences on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, making sure tag the Office of Student Life and #KindColumbus.
Thanks for being part of the culture of kindness that makes Ohio State, Columbus and Buckeye Nation a truly extraordinary community!
