Did you know Columbus is one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the United States? Both on and off-campus, there are plenty of places and spaces to find new menu options for all diets.

The President of Ohio State’s Vegan and Vegetarian Society, Jess Rappaport, sat down with us today to share her story and how she is encouraging people to check out vegan and vegetarian options across Ohio State through her collaboration with ABillionVeg.

What are you studying?
At Ohio State, I am studying ceramics. It is what I love to do, and I have had a passion for creating ceramic art since the sixth grade. In high school, my school had a very good program, and I realized it was something I wanted to continue long term.

What have you gotten involved in here on campus?
I am the President of the Vegan and Vegetarian Society, and a lot of my free time goes into doing this. I am also the Vice President of Slick, which is the club within the Ceramics Department.

Why did you decide to get involved with the Vegan and Vegetarian Society?
I immediately joined the society during my freshman year on campus after learning about them at the Student Involvement Fair. I decided to go vegan in high school, and I thought joining the Vegan and Vegetarian Society here on campus would be a good way to explore veganism further. From then on, I have been a very involved member, and as a result, I was asked to serve as president this school year!

Tell us about your partnership with ABillionVeg to create an Ohio State diet guide.
ABillionVeg reached out to me this past year about helping to create a diet guide of vegetarian and vegan options both on campus and in Columbus. With Columbus being one of the most vegan-friendly cities, and many young people in the area seeking vegetarian and vegan options, I was excited to have a hand in bringing new options to students.

I collaborated with ABillionVeg’s marketing team and developed the writing and photo portions of the guide. The ABillionVeg design team assisted with the layout and designing of the magazine, and we got it published! For each option, I reviewed and attached a photo journal. The guide is meant to help anyone interested in finding these food options and to help discover options that they have never explored before.

What is your favorite part of the Vegan and Vegetarian Society?
Our society is a community. It’s a great way to meet new people and to bring people together through fun events like apple picking and visiting vegan restaurants.
