For students, by students: Emily Chen’s Buck-i-Frenzy Experience
We sat down with Emily Chen, soon-to-be Ohio State grad and current Event Marketing and Communications Intern within the Office of Student Life. Emily gave us a glimpse into her life and her internship experience.
What are you studying and why?
I am a marketing major. I chose marketing because I like working with people and am fascinated by how people think. I like connecting people with ideas and I think that is a lot of what marketing entails.
What made you want to find a campus job?
I knew I wanted to have an income throughout college, so I began working as an Office Assistant on campus. I like being able to work for an on-campus position because it is so flexible and my supervisors were understanding of outside commitments. When it came to looking for my next job, everyone working in Student Life was so friendly and fun, so it made it an easy choice to want to join them!
Why did you think that this role would be a good fit for you?
I had always attended Buck-I-Frenzy and loved the event. When I started searching for internships, I was drawn to this position because it gave me the opportunity to use and develop new skills, like communication and teamwork. It focused on event planning, which is a piece of marketing that I wasn’t familiar with but was interested in.
How did working on the marketing and communications team help your career planning?
It taught me a lot of great leadership skills and helped me grow as a leader. I developed my inner communication skills and the position has also helped me to be more organized and better with time management. I feel as though these skills are applicable in any career path and it has been a great way to prepare for life post-graduation.
What is your favorite part of working for the marketing and communications team?
Getting to meet a lot of different people across different departments. It isn’t just working within Student Life, you connect with Rec Sports, Facility Planning and meet so many new people from different majors. I got to develop friendships and a whole Ohio State network.
What is your best piece of advice for the next Event Marketing and Communications intern?
Get excited about learning new things and creating a unique experience for other Buckeyes. In this position, you truly have the power to impact student experiences for the better. Embrace challenges and get close to your co-workers, and you’ll have a blast!
