Food insecurity affects millions of people across the United States every year. At The Ohio State University, we’re striving to do our part to help the Columbus community eradicate food scarcity and insecurity.

Each November, an Ohio State student cohort, Pay It Forward, hosts the Battle Against Hunger. This initiative honors National Hunger Awareness Month through local service trips, food drives and educational events.

The goal? Help Ohio State students learn about the issues surrounding hunger and food insecurity in their community, while also collecting supplies and making a difference.

There are four ways for you to get involved and make an impact on the lives of those struggling with food insecurity:

#1: Donate swipes through GrubHub
Search “Virtual Donations” from the Ohio State campus pickup section on the GrubHub App. Select “Donate $5.” Every swipe donated goes toward local food pantries in the Columbus community. You can donate as many swipes as you’d like!

#2: Volunteer with a Columbus Food Insecurity Organization
Throughout November, Pay It Forward will be organizing local service trips for Ohio State students. Each trip will be focused on eradicating food insecurity within the community.

Interested in signing up? Visit the Pay It Forward website.

#3: Attend a FYSS presentation
You can learn about food insecurity through a First-Year Success Series (FYSS) presentation. Pay It Forward will be covering ways to get involved with social justice initiatives and provide information education on the topic. As an added bonus, freshmen will receive FYSS credit.

#4: Host a Food Drive
You can give back as a student org by hosting a food drive! It’s a great way to give back with your friends and have fun. Interested in facilitating for your org? Contact Amanda Sadler to get started.

Ready to get involved? Visit Ohio State’s Pay It Forward website for more information.
