This week, we sat down with Boo Radley Society member Nick Hamilton. We talked through his goals, passions and what made Boo Radley the student org for him. With all he is doing on campus, Nick is making a difference.

What are you studying here on campus?
At Ohio State, I am a Pharmaceutical Sciences major, Bioethics minor and am on a Pre-Med track. I chose pharma because it aligned well with going to Medical School, with all electives relating to the medical field in some form. I chose Bioethics because of a mission trip I went on with MedLife. I saw that there were a lot of issues within the medical field that weren’t directly related to science and medicine, and I wanted to learn more about how I could help fix them.

Why medical school?
I’ve seen how much medicine can improve someone’s life. I had four surgeries in high school, not being able to lift my arm past my shoulder and not being able to play sports. It’s crazy to me that doctors every day can change someone’s way of life, just like they changed mine. You are doing everything you can to help someone each day. I think doctors are in a unique position of impacting the world through individuals, and they are making an impact in some form daily.

What are you involved in on campus?
After attending a MedLife trip my freshman year, I started to organize the trips. Our next one will be heading to Peru over Winter Break. I also conduct research at the James Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Hematology Wing, where some of my work will be getting published in the Journal of Blood. I am also in the James L. Moore Mentoring Program for transfer students.

With all your other involvements, how did you find Boo Radley? What made it stand out?
I chose to join Boo Radley for a few reasons. In high school, my school had a week of Random Acts of Kindness. I started a random compliment campaign during the Kindness Week, so when I found Boo Radley at the involvement fair it spoke to me. A lot of people on campuses struggle with mental health, and something as small as a note has the power to change someone’s day.

What do you view Boo Radley’s purpose to be?
The way I see it, there are two benefits to Boo Radley:

  1. We want to do things because they are fun and care-free
  2. We want to prioritize mental health — we try to indirectly combat mental health through our events and campaigns

I have struggled with mental illness. We understand that little things can make a big impact from day to day and it’s why we do what we do.

What is your favorite part of Boo Radley?
The people. We are always coming up with new events to increase positivity in new ways, and everyone is so supportive. I know if I am having a bad day, they have my back.

What advice do you have for incoming Buckeyes?
Join something because you want to, not because you think it will look good on a resume. Most places don’t care what you did, but rather how it has shaped you.
