Looking for something to do during the first week of classes? We’ve narrowed it down to the top five things you won’t want to miss out on as you start your Buckeye adventure:

Skyline view of the city of Columbus

#1 Explore the city

Hop on a bus and explore the Columbus Museum of Art or check out a Columbus Clippers game. Indulge your taste buds with a Short North Food Tour.

Ohio State’s Discount Ticket Program (D-Tix) offers tickets to Columbus-area shows, museums, concerts, sporting events and more at an exclusive rate. The program is funded by the student activity fee and is available to current Columbus campus undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

#2 Attend events

With dozens of events and activities on the Welcome Week calendar, there is bound to be something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you like being a part of a crowd or you prefer smaller events, there are plenty of things to do during Welcome Week.

Rec Sports is hosting several tournaments, including basketball, volleyball, log rolling and spikeball. There will be a number of cultural celebrations, including an LGBTQ Mix and Mingle, International Student Welcome Party, Latinx Welcome Cookout and a Family Affair and Reunion. You don’t want to miss Buck-I-Frenzy, a lifestyle festival packed with fun and free stuff.

#3 Learn more about student orgs

Ohio State has more than 1,400 registered student orgs, so chances are, there’s at least one that fits your needs and interests. In addition to building lasting friendships, student organizations provide opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, community engagement and so much more.

The Student Involvement Fair, which will be held August 18, from 4–7 p.m. on The Oval, is a great way to explore opportunities to get involved on campus. Another way to discover student orgs is by utilizing the online student organization directory to search based on your unique interests.

#4 Meet new people

Your residence hall is an ideal place to connect with new people. Be sure to participate in the events in your building.

Finding a part-time campus job is another great way to connect with people. Use Handshake to explore on-campus jobs.

Stop by the Campus Locator Booths to learn your way around campus and get to know fellow Buckeyes along the way. Meeting a new person can start with a simple hello on the campus bus, in a dining hall line or on an elevator.

#5 Give back

Get to know the Columbus community while uniting with fellow Buckeyes for a day of service. Join over 1,000 of your peers on Saturday, August 24, for Pay It Forward’s 21st Annual Community Commitment, one of the largest single-day community service events held on a college campus.

You will travel to one of several Columbus agencies for a day of service. Past projects have included working at COSI, local food pantries, the Columbus Zoo and a variety of other nonprofit agencies.
